AFT-WV Staff Representative Joy Jenkins is on the campuses regularly to build the union so that we continue to provide higher education employees a strong voice at the campus and state capitol.  Joy can be reached at 1-800-222-9838 or by email her at jjenkins@aftwv.org.  Classified staff and faculty are represented on the Higher Education Policy Commission by John Estep, an AFT-WV Staff Representative.  John was recently elected to a leadership position on the Commission.  Bob Morgenstern lobbies for higher education and grievances are handled by Chris Barr.  Working with our members, Chris Barr has won a series of victories for our members.  For example:

  • At Fairmont State, an attempt to reduce a member’s classification was prevented;
  • At Marshall University, multiple classified staff members had their classifications  adjusted to reflect their actual responsibilities and duties;
  • At New River CTC, a denial of a faculty member’s promotion was reversed and the faculty member was granted a promotion.
  • At Southern WVCTC, a denial of a faculty member’s promotion was reversed and the faculty member was granted a promotion.
  • At WV State University, two faculty members were granted compensation to reflect their overload assignments;
  • At Shepherd University, a denial of merit pay was reversed.  In addition a classified staff member’s letter of reprimand was removed from their file.

In addition, grievances have been favorably resolved dealing with an employee’s PIQ and evaluations.   If you are a member and need help, we are but a phone call away!

Finally, Concord University is on the threshold of being granted a Charter by AFT.  This is an honor as it recognizes the high level of membership, activism by the members at the campus and state level, and the presence of a dedicated union leadership team at the local level.  Congratulations to our members at Concord!

Don’t forget – At the end of July, staff and faculty will receive an increase in the Annual Experience Increment (AEI).   Thanks to efforts by AFT-WV, faculty and staff will receive $60.00 for each year of service, an increase of $10.00. Next year we will again focus on increasing the AEI.
